Study trip to Weimar in July 2022
After our five-hour trip, we—the Q11 class, Leila, and our P-seminar instructor, Ms. Armstrong—arrived in Weimar at our lodging, the Gasthaus zur Rose. We rested for an hour first and then got ready for our first visit to the Nietzsche Archive. Before the tour of the archive, Funda gave us a short presentation on Nietzsche. What the class enjoyed most was the interactive quiz at the Nietzsche Archive. Afterward, we went to the city center, where the Museum of the Weimar Republic is located. That’s also where the famous statues of Goethe and Schiller are found. Before we toured the museum, Reyhan told us a bit more about the Weimar Republic era. For dinner, we went to a pizzeria. On the way back to our hotel, we accidentally rode one stop too far and had to walk back to the guesthouse. But that wasn’t so bad, since on the way back we had a great view of the Goethe Archive at sunset.
The next day, we had breakfast at a café. Afterward, we visited the Schiller House, and Aysenur told us more about Schiller’s life. Right after that, we visited the Goethe House. It was very interesting to see and hear (with the audio guide) how these famous figures had lived back then. Since we weren’t done yet, we then made our way to Goethe’s Garden House. To get there, we had to walk through a park. Later, we returned to the city center to visit Duchess Anna Amalia’s palace. The interiors were very opulent, and there was plenty to marvel at. For example, the harp that the duchess had played was still in one of the rooms. With the help of the audio guide, it was another great experience to immerse ourselves in the Duchess’s world and learn more about the past. We also couldn’t have missed the famous and beautiful Anna Amalia Library, which was named after the Duchess. That was our last stop, as we unfortunately had to head back afterward. After many delays, we finally arrived back at school.
